Thinking About the Year Ahead with Your Horse and Dog

2026 Goal Setting

There is something about the start of a new year that makes many of us pause for a moment. It feels like a chance to take stock, breathe a little deeper, and think about what we want the year ahead to look like. Maybe not in a big, dramatic resolution kind of way, but more of a quiet check-in.

And for us… that thinking naturally includes our horses and dogs. They are such a big part of our family, daily routines, our time outdoors, and our sense of purpose.

Starting with You

Before thinking about your animals, it’s important to start with yourself. It’s the old cliché of ‘putting your oxygen mask on first’.

How do you want this year to feel day to day? Not just what you want to achieve, but how you want life to feel while you are doing it.

More calm? More balance?  A little more time outside? Less rushing?

Small Changes Count

It does not have to mean a complete lifestyle overhaul. Often, it’s the smallest habits that make the biggest difference.

That might be a short walk with your dog before the day starts, or a few quiet minutes while grooming your horse. Simply ‘giving yourself permission’ to slow down when you can.

There is no perfect routine. Just something that supports you rather than drains you.

Thinking About Your Horse

Every horse is different, and every partnership is different too.

When you think about your horse this year, it can help to ask where they are right now rather than where you think they should be.

What Does Your Horse Need More Of?

For some horses, our goals for them might involve building fitness or confidence. For others, it might be about easing off the pressure and focusing more on comfort and consistency.

Not every goal has to involve competitions or milestones. Sometimes the best goals are about enjoying quieter rides, improving communication, or simply feeling more at ease together.

Rest and recovery matter just as much as training. Small changes to routine, turnout, or pre- and post- exercise care can improve how your horse feels day to day.

And Your Dog Too

Dogs have a wonderful way of reminding us to stay present. They do not worry about plans or progress. They just want to be with us.

Keeping Things Enjoyable

Setting goals for you and your dog does not need to be complicated. Trying a new walking route, refreshing training with short, positive sessions, or spending more time just being together all count.

If you have an older dog, goals may be more about comfort than activity. Gentle movement, mental stimulation, and plenty of rest can make a big difference to how they feel.

Often, it is the little adjustments that improve your quality of life the most.

Being Kind to Yourself Along the Way

Life has a habit of interrupting the best intentions. Weather changes, work gets busy or energy levels can dip. That does not mean you have failed!

Celebrate the small wins. A quiet moment where everything feels settled. Those moments matter. Progress does not have to be linear to be meaningful.
